Very interesting.  Morality is not practical morality, but symbolic, in the Western world.  I think this also applies to the right.  This seems to have to do with an aversion to too much reality.  If you stay above it, in the symbolic realm, you can manipulate meaning so that you always look good, and the risk of any kind of engagement is almost entirely eliminated.  Those who live in a post-industrial society seem to be able to afford this indulgence of playing with other people's lives.
