My automatic reflex was ALWAYS to blame myself, not others. I came from a culture of ultra-Christianity. I think I have mentioned it before. Only very belatedly did I learn that there are historical contingencies and other people's attitudes that are way beyond my control. You can still feel guilty and ashamed on their behalves -- and regularly I do, when I see what they get up to -- but one is really only capable of being responsible for oneself.
