Q&A and the Liberal Left | History of the Present

The main problem is that liberalism is essentially concerned with a freedom from politics. In this sense, it is a continuation of the early philosophical and Christian disdain for political affairs and the public realm. As with Plato and Augustine, the modern liberal believes that politics is best kept to a minimum and is ultimately only a means towards a higher end, in their case, the protection of private property and personal security.
