It is possible to purge the demons in a positive manner, by means of literature and writing. However, I suspect that many people sense that there is something in this style of writing that is dangerous or frightening to them (after all, so many people have purged their demons into the scapegoat, so a scapegoat's writing can be intrinsically threatening just for containing all these unwanted affects). The only way for a society to develop its maturity and transcend its demons is to face them, though.
