It's a very hard book to read, and I would certainly read it before reading any articles about it, or indeed skip the articles altogether as they tend to give superficial, overly rational and narrow interpretations.
The background culture of the writer is African animism and Christianity, so he says some things in order to shock. But what he is really doing is looking into the structure of political power as well as the impact power has on our minds. There are elements of FIGHT CLUB in this, as you will see. There's a lot of doubling or tripling of himself as well as an inverted Pilgrim's Progress. You will also meet a Zimbabwean revolutionary version of the Baader-Meinhof gang. If you read up on "The Second Chimurenga", that was the actual war for national liberation in Zimbabwe. That's the background. But really the author is just going deeper and deeper into his subjectivity in search of....something.
