I've finally (after three years of bitter struggle) figured out what my basic psychological conflict is, which has gained, rather than lost ferocity. It's whether I should be African, and true to my roots, by accepting that a rather high level of violence is normal (a kind of Darwinism, although more than this, and ultimately a realist's position, for anyone living in Africa.) Or should I stay true to my later, Western conditioning and cultural sensibility that there is nothing whatsoever normal about any sort of violence?
