shamanism in a nutshell

Shamanism involves an implicit understanding of pre-Oedipal psychological mechanisms such as splitting and projective identification to bring what is the product of traumatic loss into an authentic and revitalising present context. This is the nature of its mode of healing. In the Nietzschean sense, it also involves knowledge of how to preserve oneself -- that is, how to avoid being destroyed by those who have broken asunder.
