In the end we came to realize that fighting was a way of life that was just an end in itself. One day some of us might graduate to ride the tumbulations, once the 'apes' had mastered them for us in the trials. That was a dream almost far from hope. In the other city were men and women who went about their daily lives, but life was lived in the horizontal modality for them. I simply mean they didn't look up or down but simply lived life as it came along, without striving. When they did argue it was to barter for a better deal, a nice home and furnishings, or better options for their kids. Their politics was limited to home affairs, it is fair to say. They took these very seriously though, and thought themselves sophisticated in their manner of competing.
