They can't understand irony. If the tone is ironic, they view it as serious and gravely bad, or an indictment of your personality in some way. What they see and what they experience is in such a limited range of understanding, because they can't pick up on humor, especially black humor. It seems to really perplex them that someone could just laugh at their own bad luck. They want to hurt you and make you suffer if you seem to rise above your circumstances.
