What you describe, about people seeming to walk around dissociated, is what I first noticed coming out of traditional society into modernity. Actually, people are afraid of emotion, because so often what is behind it is a hidden cost, or some form of manipulation. The political and economic order of bourgeois society sets everyone at each other's throats. Therefore, people detach from each other, and from reality, and choose not to 'know'.
