Sorry, Mike said I should explain this poem. The author is a black Zimbabwean writer, who lived during a time of war. His sister, Tsitsi , was in Zimbabwe after it had gained its liberation and turned nominally Marxist. She was in the anti-Apartheid movement (regarding South Africa) and South African agents had put a bomb in a TV set she had imported, thus resulting in her being "bombed to heaven".

The author turns to alcoholism, to the degree of coughing up blood.
Even though, politically he is recognized as coming from a famiily that has made political sacrifices, he is not all cool with that.
Furthermore, he has become too overwhelmed by exhaustion to get to the bottom of his own psychological trauma: "I wake up too tired to break out so bright red a bubble". He is too tired for the analysis and too tired for the defeat.
