Yes, it was codified in the 1980s. But it was narcissistic attitudes that promoted Reagan and Thatcher to high offices in the first place, it was narcissists who voted for those "leaders".

But the way I see it was that super rich people were able to hoodwink the general population by telling them that by means of magical thinking they, too, could become wealthier beyond their imaginations. But the super rich (who may have been super strategic or super tactical and not necessarily narcissistic as such) knew that they would be the only ones who would benefit from an ideology that kept the majority in an infantilized mode of thinking. The population only went along with it because they were gullible.
