What they do is take things out of context, which is when they reveal how their minds work. A compliment toward them is turned into an insult in their own minds, and then they take revenge for it. This may even be a compliment in the form of "I think you can help me with this". Somehow that becomes a threat to them, as if you were trying to test them or trip them up. Then they start to shuffle through all the different social skins they can wear to mask their unease.
