You know I think it is the modern ideology. If someone did something to you, you are responsible for figuring out what has happened, and you have no right to alleviate the pain by gaining skills for fighting back. To do so makes you worse than the perpetrator. You just have to keep on figuring out why it happened and making amends. There is another layer of difficulty that moderns like to add to this. They imply that only weak people get attacked. That s a very strange addition, but here I am probably talking about proto-right versus proto-left political tendencies. The right insists (from lack of experience?) that only the weak get attacked, and the left insists that you deserved it.
