The way modern westerners understand power relations is flaky, to say the least. You, as an uprooted 15-year old from an intensely patriarchal society obviously had no power in either your old society or the society you were forced into, yet others chose to see you as if you were.

Perhaps Israeli society isn't exactly like Rhodesian society, but this discussion of power relations reminds me way too much about the recent death of that 13-year old girl in the Israeli settlement, and how sickos from my Facebook friends were cheering her death on as a kind of "victory" for the colonized/displaced Palestinians. I'm sorry, but a 13-year old girl from an ultra-orthodox Jewish background - where little boys are heavily privileged but little girls are treated like the scum of the earth - has no control over Israeli policy at all. It's just bizarre how identity and its relation to social hierarchy is understood in this time.
 
Yes, it is really bizarre. But, worse than flakey, it is criminally abhorrrent.
